Lights, Legacy, and Local Screens: Park City's own Art House Cinema

It’s a big moment for film in Park City. This winter will mark the last year Sundance Film Festival is held here, and with the recent passing of Robert Redford, the founder of the festival and a champion of independent film, there’s a sense of reflection across town.

While Sundance’s chapter here comes to a close, Park City Film continues to carry the torch for independent cinema all year long. Established in 1995 as a project of the Arts Council of Park City & Summit County, the nonprofit theater has become a cornerstone for film lovers in our community. Their mission to create community through film feels especially relevant right now.

The upcoming lineup at Park City Film is an excellent showcase of the variety the Jim Santy Auditorium has to offer. They’ve programmed a Robert Redford Tribute Series from October through December, screening favorites like All The Presidents Men and A River Runs Through It. They’re also showing newer films like Train Dreams, a Sundance 2025 selection, and After The Snowfall, Matchstick Production’s 2025 ski film. Add films such as Hola, Frida, which is family friendly, and you’ve got something for every type of moviegoer. These screenings are thoughtfully curated, some well-known and some you’ve never heard of, and together they create something that’s easy to take for granted: access to meaningful, community-centered art. It’s hard not to circle a few titles to look forward to on their lineup, like The Sting, Pan’s Labyrinth, and Downton Abbey: The Grande Finale.

At a time when Park City’s film identity is shifting, Park City Film feels more important than ever. It’s a reminder that storytelling still connects us and that there’s a seat waiting for all of us in the theater.
