Steel Ranch Welding: Local Arts & Culture Events Let Us into the Minds of Artists

Ryan Battersby says he and his wife Kaylin have co-owned and operated Steel Ranch Welding since 2023 “with our 2 dogs and 24 chickens in Coalville. Many of our unique pieces on our online store or at markets are a mixture of both of our ideas put together. [Some] of her favorite pieces are the animal themed ones, like the one donated to Nuzzles Ranch.” Steel Ranch specializes in custom metal art, welding, and fabrication projects large and small, and grew out of Battersby’s education in steelwork. “I have my degree from SLCC in Welding, Fabrication, and Inspection, however I have no desire to go into pipeline or oil rig welding and wanted to stay local around family. After purchasing a CNC machine, I delved into the more artistic side of metalworking. Using my background in metalworking, I am able to create lasting pieces of art and custom fabrication projects for my clients.”

Steel Ranch recently was selected to decorate a chair lift as part of Park City Mountain Resort’s Sunset on Sunrise Chair Auction, where they partnered with local nonprofit Live Like Sam to create an artful stainless steel chairlift that was auctioned off to support the Live Like Sam organization. Steel Ranch is also part of the CREATE PC Local Artist Collective, where some of Battersby’s smaller metal artworks are displayed. “I love how many opportunities Create PC and the Arts Council provides for local artists to showcase their work to local residents and visitors.”

Steel Ranch also regularly participates in the Oakley Farmers Market, Summit Arts Market, and as a featured artist at Art on the Trails. “As a metalwork artist/fabricator, I have the unique opportunity to work directly with clients…I often pull inspiration directly from our community, whether it be artistic celebration of a refurbished swinging historic ski lift chair or a new piece donated to the Nuzzles Ranch highlighting animal rescue and furry friends.” The Steel Ranch duo also love to support the many Arts & Culture happenings throughout Summit County—“As a resident of Coalville, my wife and I really look forward to the Summit County Fine Arts [Exhibit] at the Summit County Fair.” Battersby says there are many reasons to support local artists and creative programs: “When local artists are featured in high-caliber Art and Culture events, it allows local residents and visitors alike to experience the mind of the artist and the community through a more diverse and cultural expression.”

Battersby’s work, whether public art or private commission, is often inspired by the natural beauty and unique history of Summit County. “I am currently working on an authentic replica of an old Mining Ore Cart showcasing the heritage of Park City with a creative and unique flair added on to reflect the client's own style.”
