Dr. Alison Delgado is a pediatrician who has been on staff at Summit Pediatrics in Park City since 2013. She is also a runner with an amazing story to tell and now a local author.

After experiencing a near-fatal accident with dim prospects for recovery Alison beat the odds and wanted to share her story of hope, prayer and love.

The title My Race for Life applies to her story on several levels. “I thought of the “race” clearly because I am a runner and my running career is a big part of the story but recovery from an accident is a marathon not a sprint,” assures Alison. “Long distance running is all about keeping an eye on the long distance goal and knowing what you have to do day by day to get there. Basically each day of my recovery I would wake up and think ‘what am I doing today to get me closer to getting back to work?’ And again, my recover wasn’t just physical, it was a renewal of all of the things I valued and all of the people I loved in my life.”

The first chapter is entitled “Pursuit of Happiness” which for Alison, has taken on a much different meaning since her accident. In her younger years she thought she had to be perfect in order to be noticed or accepted but that often brought failure and unhappiness. “I recognize I will never be perfect. My accident showed me what a great support system I have in my family and friends and their love was my motivation throughout my recovery. I am not a perfect wife, mother or physician, but I strive every day to do my best for the people around me and I hope they can see it. My pursuit is trying to make sure I am using the second chance I was given to make a positive impact on others, even if it is small.”

Since her recovery, Alison knew she had a story that had to be told. “Any medical professional (especially emergency medicine or neurocritical care physician) who hears my story would tell you it is amazing I am even here,” explains Alison. “Even some of my best friends thought I would be in a nursing home. But I am here; living a normal life and thankful for each day. Life will always throw you challenges but you have to believe you can always achieve more than what anyone else expected.”
