Monster Drawing Rally 2021 // Call for Artists

Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

The Arts Council of Park City & Summit County and Kimball Art Center will once again team up to host this year’s annual Monster Drawing Rally, an event that allows artists to interact with spectators, collectors, and other local artists. The organizations are now accepting artist applications for the event, which will be held outside on July 10th at Kimball Art Center’s new location at the YARD, 1251 Kearns Blvd.

This year marks the fifth annual Monster Drawing Rally, and one of the first in-person creative programming events in Summit County in over a year! Last year, due to COVID-19, the organizations had to pivot to produce an online event called Monster Drawing Rally // Digital + Rewired, instead of hosting their usual live art fundraiser. While the 2020 virtual event was very different than our typical energetic in-person event, the Arts Council and the KAC felt fortunate to experiment with online programming and serve artists during a particularly challenging time.

“We are thrilled to bring this creative, inspiring, and energetic event back in 2021,” noted Arts Council’s executive director Jocelyn Scudder. “This is one of our favorite events of the year, and has come to be a community favorite as well. We encourage both emerging and established artists to apply—it’s a wonderful opportunity for local artists to create, network with fellow creatives, and meet potential new collectors.”

The event will look a bit different this year, but will maintain the majority of its unique aspects that make it so special.

Here’s how the event will work—over the course of the night, artists will sign up for one or two shifts and create artwork for 50 minutes. Artists may bring partially completed work, but all pieces must be finished during the Monster Draw event. Pieces must be two dimensional and the maximum size is 11x17 inches. Basic supplies such as paper, pencils, crayons, markers, and colored pencils will be provided, but artists are welcome to bring additional materials. Finished pieces are available for purchase when the 50-minute timer runs out. All pieces are sold for $50, and any piece with more than one hopeful owner will be decided by a random card draw.

“Not knowing who will win the artwork adds to the fast-paced nature of this event,” noted Scudder. “Winners are determined by luck of the draw, not how much they can pay, which we feel adds to the suspense and also our mission—to provide art access to everyone in our community.”

“Our mission at Kimball Art Center is to connect and inspire through art,” says Aldy Milliken, Kimball Art Center executive director. “We love partnering with the Arts Council on the Monster Draw Rally as we welcome our local creative community and audiences to the new space. Along with our exhibitions, there is art for everyone to enjoy and experience.”

The event will follow all COVID-19 related health guidelines set by Summit County, and both organizations are working closely to align with their protocols and ensure the safety of artists and patrons. The event will be held outside this year, in the parking lot of the Kimball Art Center’s new YARD location next to Boneyard to allow for ample social distancing. Organizers recommend all event patrons wear masks when visiting the Monster Drawing Rally and will provide disposable masks if visitors do not have their own.

Events like Monster Draw promote local artists by making their artwork more visible and accessible to the community and by showcasing the skill involved in the creative process. Both organizations are so glad to be hosting in-person events again to connect local artists with the community.

Monster Draw participating artists are also welcomed to contribute one art piece to the event’s silent auction. Artists set the price for their artwork and receive 60% of the final bid price, with the remaining 40% being split between the two nonprofit organizations.

Artist applications will be accepted through June 10th. Applications can be filled out and submitted at www.pcscarts.org/monster-drawing-rally.
