Treasure Map to Finding Water and Toilet Paper

We are pleased to introduce Trove Gallery as our May gallery feature! Our monthly blog series showcases all of our wonderful Park City galleries on a rotating basis.

Every month we tell the story of a local gallery and the gallerists and artists behind them. For this month’s spotlight we spoke with Jen Schumacher, owner of Trove Gallery at 804 Main St. in Park City.

Trove Gallery is proud to represent a variety of talent  with an emphasis on Utah artists. They strive to stay current and maintain an environment that is comfortable and inviting to all.

To learn more about Trove Gallery we spoke with gallery owner Jen Schumacher. Here’s more from her.

Arts Council: Tell me a bit about Trove Gallery
Jen Schumacher: Trove Gallery has been here since 1997. It was started by Connie and David Katz and it was called Coda Gallery, after their names. I worked with them for a long time and when they passed away my partner Scott and I bought the gallery. We renamed it Trove Gallery and chose the name “trove” because it means gathering of valuable things. We support not only Utah artists but artists across the nation.

AC: Tell me about the selection of artists that you feature in the gallery.
JC: We are pretty contemporary and dabble in this and that. We are a bigger gallery with 2500 square feet with a lot of sculpture including bronze and mixed media. Since we have so much space we are able to have a large selection of art. We definitely have an eclectic mix that is friendly, colorful and fun! We represent Lyman Whitaker's wind sculpture which you will see around Park City.

AC: Do you have a favorite piece in the space right now?

KZ: I love this colorful, hand carved wooden piece by Silvia Davis called “Carnival” which features an old carnival game where you hit balloons with darts. It’s so fun to have because you never know who’s going to enjoy it, understand it and put it in their house. You’d have to have a certain personality.

AC: Do you have any upcoming exhibits in the pipeline?

JT: We’ve recently  just been featuring artists on a rotating basis as opposed to exhibits. For this month’s Gallery Stroll we will be featuring Justin Wheatley and Teri Pena. Justin is a Salt Lake City based artist and high school teacher.  Teri is a new artist in Midway, she just moved here full time from Greenville South Carolina, she does abstract work. Her vibe is more modern so it’s fun to see people respond to her work. We’re excited for Gallery Stroll this Friday! We’ll be open late and it’s going to be a beautiful weekend.

AC:  Why do you think art is important?

JT: It’s a lifestyle and a passion. I don’t have any piece of art that I’ve purchased and regretted. Art is a necessity in your world. It makes such a difference in people’s lives, even if you’re not art aficionados.
