The Sound of Music at the Egyptian Theatre

The Sound of Music, was the final collaboration of legendary team of Rogers and Hammerstein. It debuted on Broadway in 1959 and won 5 Tony Awards including Best Musical. In 1965 it hit the big screen and won 5 Academy Awards including Best Picture.

The musical in either form was destined to be a classic, filled with drama, romance, a loving and talented family and one song after the other audiences around the world can’t help join in singing. When the Ziegfeld Theatre brings their version of the musical to the Egyptian Theatre stage, it is a true family affair, as Director Morgan Parry is related to four members of her cast.

Parry’s husband Caleb, recently seen as King Arthur in Spamalot on The Egyptian stage, is playing Captain Georg von Trapp and niece Keely plays the oldest daughter Liesl.  Morgan needed some additional members of the community to be in the ensemble. She states, “I needed some adorable and "more mature" individuals in the show, and what better place to look for them than the grandparents of my children,” explains Parry. “Conveniently my in-laws, Lloyd and Virginia Parry, both have over 20 years of stage experience under them and love being on stage with their son and granddaughter, so they said yes to my pleadings!“

Everyone has their favorite scenes and songs from this iconic play but from a directing standpoint, Parry loves any numbers that portray Maria as a powerful female and also the end as the family escapes from Nazi controlled Austria. “I am a strong believer in the power of women and the need for our voices to be heard. Maria's voice as a nature lover, human lover, optimist, communicator with Universe or a Higher Power, and eventual mother and wife, to name a few, were powerful moments for me to portray and direct. I have always been fascinated with World War II and specifically those that fought against the Nazi regime, so studying and directing those scenes was very poignant for me. Especially watching them come to life as we are observing the tragedy of Ukraine and Russia right now.”

The Sound of Music will be performed at The Egyptian Theater March 25 through April 3.
