Local Author Feature // Susan Silverton

Local author, Susan Silverton, left her position as Academic Vice President at a Canadian university to serve on the board of two software companies. She found her way to Salt Lake City and eventually in 2017, attracted by our mountains and community, she relocated to Park City.

Although Susan loves the outdoors, she, along with her research and imagination, are often behind a computer putting into words, a story of our earth and it's people in the far, far distant future.  

“My series is future fiction, 95% based on science we currently use,” says Silverton. “Some of my work is grounded in new science I keep reading about. The other 5% of this series, and it's underlying theme is my projection for our world, it's people and their lives in about 1,000 years from now.”

ARLAND Book One was first published in 2007, then republished in 2018 followed by ARLAND Book Two REBELLION in 2019. ARLAND Book Three The GUARDIANS has an early 2021 projected publication date.

“The ARLAND series is an exploration of possible lives in an imagined remote future of our Earth,” explains the author. “Some of the characters reflect personal experience. Although a few experiences of my childhood may have crept into ARLAND, most of the cast comes from over four decades of my life in academic institutions as student, researcher, professor, physician, Dean, and Vice President.”

Silverton has been collecting research for decades and is confident this is going to be a long series. “I have rough but complete drafts of four more volumes. I'm halfway through writing another complete draft of book eight. At this point, I estimate I will produce either 9 or 10 books in this series.”

I'm very happy to be here in Park City and to be connected with other artists as a community within a community. I thank you for allowing me to share my own story, as well as the story of what I write, with a broader audience. Art expressed as the written word needs to be shared to communicate different life views to our diverse community of readers.”
